Kihage - Kihage

It is a deciduous shrub of the legume family (APG classification: Fabaceae). It can grow to over 2 meters in height. The branches spread out horizontally and are somewhat zigzagged. The flowers are smaller than those of the Japanese bush clover, 7 to 8 mm long. The standard petals are pale yellow with purple spots at the base, the wing petals are purple, and the keel petals are yellowish-white. The fruit is oblong and about 1 cm long. It has a long flowering period, beginning in June and continuing to bloom until around October. It grows in a slightly different habitat to other bush clover plants, and is commonly found in semi-shaded forests and on rocks along ridges. It grows in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, except for the Japan Sea side from the Tohoku region to the Hokuriku region, and is also distributed in Chugoku.

マメ科（APG分類：マメ科）の落葉低木。高さは2メートル以上にもなる。枝はやや水平に広がり、多少ジグザグになる。花はヤマハギより小さく、長さ7～8ミリメートル。旗弁(きべん)は淡黄色で、基部は紫色の斑(ふ)があり、翼弁は紫色、竜骨弁は黄白色。果実は長楕円(ちょうだえん)形で、長さ約1センチメートル。花期は長く、6月ころから咲き始め、10月くらいまで咲き続ける。ほかのハギとは生育地をやや異にし、半日陰の林の中や、尾根筋(すじ)の岩の上などに普通にみられる。東北地方から北陸地方にかけての日本海側を除く本州、四国、九州に生育し、中国にも分布する。
