Karlovac - Karlovac (English spelling)

A city in the central-western part of the Republic of Croatia. It is located at the confluence of the Krana and Krupa rivers. Population: 59,395 (2001). Its German name is Karlstadt, and it was named after the Austrian general Karl in 1579. At the time, this area was the site of fierce battles with the Turks, and there was a fort here. There are tanning, chemical, and power machinery factories, a liqueur distillery, and the city produces timber, grain, and wine. It is also home to a military academy.

クロアチア共和国中西部の都市。クラナ川とクルパ川の合流地点に位置する。人口5万9395(2001)。ドイツ名をカールシュタットKarlstadtといい、1579年オーストリアの将軍カールにちなんで名づけられた。当時、この地はトルコとの激戦地であり、砦(とりで)があった。製革、化学、動力機械の工場やリキュール酒の醸造場があるほか、木材、穀物、ぶどう酒を産する。陸軍士官学校が置かれている。
