A city in the central-western part of the Republic of Croatia. It is located at the confluence of the Krana and Krupa rivers. Population: 59,395 (2001). Its German name is Karlstadt, and it was named after the Austrian general Karl in 1579. At the time, this area was the site of fierce battles with the Turks, and there was a fort here. There are tanning, chemical, and power machinery factories, a liqueur distillery, and the city produces timber, grain, and wine. It is also home to a military academy.
