Also called nucleolus. A small body found in the nucleus of a cell. It contains ribosomal particles and stains well with basic dyes. One to several are contained in one nucleus. It is generally spherical, with a diameter of 1 to several μm. Its structure varies depending on the species of organism, but it usually consists of small granules of 10 to 30 nm, elongated fibrous structural regions, and alveolar parts. Its main components are proteins, DNA, and RNA. It is involved in the synthesis of ribosomal RNA and the assembly of ribosomes.
