In the early Middle Ages, during the reign of Charlemagne (768-814), a silver standard currency system was established where 1 libra (pound) = 20 solidi (shillings) = 240 denarii (pence), and denarius and half denarius silver coins were minted to counter the gold coins of the Byzantine Empire and Islam. In the 12th and 13th centuries, large Groschen silver coins were minted in Italy, and from the end of the 15th century, when Germany's silver production increased, thalers (made by Joachimsthal) were minted. These were minted in various countries from the 16th century onwards, and became the world currency. ...
