This garden is located in Okayama City, in the southern part of Okayama Prefecture. It is a representative example of a feudal lord's garden, constructed by Ikeda Tsunamasa, the lord of the Okayama Domain, with his vassal Tsuda Nagatada as the construction commissioner. It was completed in 1700. It was originally called Chaya Yashiki and Ushirozono, and in 1871 it was given its present name. It is a magnificent stroll-style garden with a pond (→ stroll-style garden) with the left bank of the Asahi River, Okayama Castle, Misaoyama, and Keshigoyama in the background, and covers an area of 133,000 m2 . Notably, one-fifth of the garden is made of wild grass, which can be said to be the first attempt of its kind in Japan. It is considered one of Japan's Three Great Gardens, along with Kairakuen in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Kenrokuen in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is a nationally designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
