…The Volta Blanche originates north of Ouagadougou in the central highlands of Burkina Faso, flows almost south, and merges with the Volta Rouge, which originates southwest of Ouagadougou, in northern Ghana. It then flows through Ghana from north to south, collecting many other rivers. In order to develop the Volta River, Ghana planned the Volta Plan from the time of its independence. As part of this plan, the Akosombo Dam was completed in 1966 after four years of construction with the assistance of the World Bank, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries, creating a huge artificial lake, Lake Volta, with an area of approximately 8,500 km2. The power plant directly below the dam has a generating capacity of 800,000 kW, and supplies electricity not only to Ghana but also to Togo and Benin.
