…Born in Berlin, he studied natural sciences such as botany and geology at the universities of Frankfurt an der Oder and Göttingen, and became a mining inspector, but soon resigned. Following in the footsteps of Columbus, he aimed to scientifically rediscover the New World, and from 1799 to 1804, together with botanist Aimé Bonpland (1773-1858), he scientifically explored Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, and other places.
