Basic oxide - Basic oxide

Basic oxide - Basic oxide

This refers to oxides that are basic, and generally become bases when they react with water, and produce salts when they react with acids. Examples are oxides of metals, particularly non-transition elements with high electropositive potential, or transition metal elements with low valences. For example, calcium oxide, CaO, is a typical basic oxide, and when it reacts with water it becomes calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH) 2 , which is a base, and when it reacts with an acid, such as hydrochloric acid, it forms calcium chloride, CaCl2, which is a salt.
