In return for their assistance in the founding of the Later Jin Dynasty, they received the land south of the Great Wall of the province (together with the area centered on Datong in Shanxi Province, they were called the Sixteen Prefectures of Yanyun), and called present-day Beijing Nanjing (later called Yanjing) and made it their secondary capital. Therefore, the Song Dynasty controlled the southern half of the province, which was called the Hebei Route, but eventually the Jurchen people arose from the north of the Khitan and established the Jin Dynasty, and by the beginning of the 12th century had completely driven the influence of the Song Dynasty out of northern China.
