A mining and industrial city in the central state of West Bengal, India. Population: 262,000 (1991), metropolitan population: 764,000 (1991). It is located in the Damodar coalfield, India's largest coalfield. The catalyst for industrialization was the development of coal mines in Raniganj in the eastern suburbs (1820) and the construction of a steelworks in Kurchi in the western suburbs (1869). From then until independence, various industries such as steel, railway cars, and alcoholic beverages were established in the city, making it one of the few industrial cities under British rule. Even after independence, the city has become home to bicycle, plate glass, and aluminum industries. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
