It is also called Touboshi or Toboshi. It is the name of a group of rice varieties, belonging to the Indica type, with long, thin grains and red brown rice. There was a group of varieties called Zhancheng rice that was introduced from southern China to central China in the 11th century and became popular, and some of these varieties were introduced to Japan in the 11th to 14th centuries and were called Datang rice. Because it was early-ripening, resistant to drought and wet fields, and had a high yield, it was cultivated in newly reclaimed and poor-quality fields in various regions until around the 18th century, but records are scarce. It is no longer cultivated. [Hoshikawa Kiyochika] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
