A Chinese encyclopedia. Editing began in 977 under imperial order from Li Fang of the Northern Song Dynasty, and was completed in 983. It has 1,000 volumes. It was named "Taiping Yuran" (The Great Peace) because it was presented to the Emperor for viewing. It lists 5,000 items in 55 categories, from heaven, earth, the Emperor, provinces, counties, feudal domains, officials, rituals, music, Tao, and interpretation to the four barbarians, diseases, supernatural phenomena, and animals and plants. It contains the content of a representative encyclopedia from the 10th century, and gives a glimpse into the world view of the time. It cites 1,690 different documents, and many of them have been lost and are no longer available, making it a valuable historical resource. Portions of the Song edition are held in Japan, including the Seikado Bunko and the Kanazawa Bunko. A Japanese edition based on the Song edition was published in 1855 (Ansei 2).
