A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Scolopendromorpha of the class Chilopoda, but more commonly refers to the family Scolopendridae. The family Scolopendridae includes the giant giant centipede (found widely in tropical regions around the world), which can reach a body length of up to 35 cm, and is so named because many of the centipedes are large. They have 21 pairs of legs and four simple eyes on each side of their head. The mandibles of their mouthparts contain venom glands, and they prey on insects, spiders, and sometimes small animals such as frogs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
