…During his life, Casanova had relationships with all kinds of people - monarchs, aristocrats, writers, natural scientists, painters, actors, charlatans, libertines, and women from noblewomen to maids - and lived a dissolute life, armed with his shrewd talent, unreserved morals, and broad but not deep education. Although he left behind a huge amount of pamphlets, essays, letters, anecdotes, a fantastic novel, Icosameron (1788), and other prose, translations, and poetry, Casanova's fame as a writer is solely due to his Narrative of My Life (Memoirs), written in French at the Château de Dux between 1791 and 1798. His Memoirs, which are filled with descriptions of erotic love affairs, remain alive today not so much as a work of art, but as a unique document that captures the customs and people of 18th century European society. …
