General adaptation syndrome

[Stress theory]
Selye focused on the fact that when living organisms are exposed to different types of stimuli such as trauma, poisoning, cold, and infectious diseases, a certain uniform reaction occurs regardless of the nature of the stimuli. This reaction is established with the involvement of the endocrine system of the pituitary-adrenal cortex, and he thought that it was originally an adaptive reaction to the body's defense or environmental changes, and named it general adaptation syndrome. The stimuli that cause such reactions are called stressors or stress agents.

From [Serie]

…He became a naturalized Canadian and became the director and professor of the Institute of Experimental Medicine at the University of Montreal in 1945. Since 1936, he has been highly praised internationally for proposing a new concept called general adaptation syndrome, which includes the word "stress." This is generally called the "stress theory." Stress refers to the various non-specific biological reactions that occur in the body when various injuries or stimuli are applied to the mind and body from the outside world, and he argues that the mechanism behind this is deeply involved in the secretion of hormones from the pituitary-adrenal system. …
