King of the Franks (reigned 768-814) and Western Roman Emperor (reigned 800-814). Known in French as Charlemagne. He succeeded his father, King Pepin III, jointly with his brother Karlmann (751?-771), and became sole king in 771. In 774, at the request of the Pope, he conquered the Lombards. He subsequently annexed Bavaria and Saxony, defeated the Avars in the east, and sent troops to the Iberian Peninsula, establishing a vast empire stretching from the Elbe River to the Pyrenees and from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. In 800, he was crowned Western Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III, and in 812 the Byzantine Empire also recognized Charles as emperor. He strengthened the government through the system of local administrative officials called counts (Latin: comes, German: Graf) and inspectors, while encouraging the arts and sciences and ushering in the Carolingian Renaissance at his court in Aachen. His epic poems, such as The Song of Roland, make him the epitome of a medieval monarch.

フランク王国国王（在位768年―814年），西ローマ皇帝（在位800年―814年）。フランス名ではシャルルマーニュCharlemagne。父王ピピン３世の後を弟カールマンKarlmann〔751？-771〕と共同で継承，771年単独の王となる。774年教皇の要請でランゴバルドを征服。以後バイエルン，ザクセンを併合，東方のアバール人を撃破，イベリア半島にも出兵するなど，エルベ川からピレネー山脈，北海から地中海に及ぶ大帝国を樹立した。800年教皇レオ３世から西ローマ帝国帝冠を受け，812年ビザンティン帝国もカールを皇帝と承認した。地方行政官の伯（ラテン語でコメスcomes，ドイツ語でグラーフGraf）や巡察使の制度で統治機構を強化する一方で学芸を奨励し，アーヘンの宮廷を中心にカロリング・ルネサンスを招来した。《ローランの歌》をはじめ武勲詩は彼を中世君主の典型とみなしている。
