Panama Conference

Japanese:
Panama Conference

An international conference of Latin American countries held in Panama City in 1826 at the suggestion of Simón Bolívar, a leader of South American independence. At the time, the newly independent Latin American countries faced the danger of reconquest by the Holy Alliance countries, including Spain and France. Bolívar tried to counter this by uniting Latin American countries and forming an alliance. The four countries of Gran Colombia, Mexico, the Federal Republic of Central America, and Peru, as well as the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, attended the conference as observers. Brazil, Chile, and the Union of La Plata did not participate, and the United States was unable to attend due to the death of its representative during the conference. The Treaty of Union and Alliance was signed at the conference, but since only Gran Colombia ratified the treaty, the alliance was not realized and Bolívar's plan failed. Although the Panama Conference was unsuccessful, it is historically significant as the first international conference that attempted to unite and unify Latin America.
