A reaction to synthesize ethers by alkylating alkoxides or phenoxides with alkyl halides or dialkyl sulfates. RONa + R'X―→ROR' + NaX C 6 H 5 ONa + R 2 SO 4 ―→C 6 H 5 OR + NaRSO 4 This reaction was discovered in 1852 by AW Williamson in England, and is known as a simple, high-yield reaction to produce ethers.
