Coal mining began at Kaijima Coal Mine in 1884, and in 1902 the Kyushu Railway (JR Miyata Line, abolished in 1989) opened from Katsuno Station on the Chikuho Main Line, and the town developed into one of the largest coal mining towns in the Chikuho coalfield.
