A plateau region in the eastern part of Yemen, on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It generally refers to the area between Aden in the west and Oman in the east, but usually refers to the valley of the Hadramaut River. The Hadramaut River is a large wadi (dried river) with a total length of 560 km that originates in the Husn Abul region and flows into the Arabian Sea. Large and small wadis cut into the plateau, creating a rich oasis agricultural area. The middle reaches in particular are the agricultural center, producing cotton, grains (wheat, corn, millet, etc.), sesame, vegetables, dates, tobacco, etc. There are several old and beautiful towns along the Hadramaut Valley. Representative towns include Seyun, the largest town in the Hadramaut region, with its groves of date palms; Tarim, a religious town with an old university and 365 mosques; and Shibam, famous for its traditional Yemeni high-rise buildings made of sun-dried bricks. [Ryuichi Hara] World Heritage RegistrationShibam, where buildings over five stories high stand, was registered as a World Heritage Site (World Cultural Heritage) by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as the "Old Walled City of Shibam" in 1982. However, due to "potential threats from regional situations," it was added to the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2015.
