A city in the southwest of Russia, facing the northeastern coast of the Black Sea in the Krasnodar Krai. Population: about 400,000.
With a mild climate and close proximity to both mountain resorts and Black Sea coastal resorts, it is one of Russia's leading resort cities, attracting tourists all year round. With its hydrogen sulfide hot springs and mud baths, it has also flourished as a hot spring resort.
Historically, it was the site of fierce competition, but it was developed as a resort area under the Stalin administration during the Soviet era, and further investment was made under the Putin administration. It is also developing as a political and diplomatic stage, hosting the Russia-EU (European Union) summit in May 2006.
Russia was shortlisted along with Pyeongchang, South Korea, and Salzburg, Austria, as a candidate city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, and was selected as the host city at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) General Assembly held in Guatemala on July 4, 2007 local time. This is the first time that Russia has hosted the Winter Olympics. Famous Russian athletes, including tennis player Maria Sharapova and figure skater Evgeni Plushenko, served as goodwill ambassadors in the bid.
The Russian government actively supported the bid to host the Winter Olympics, and adopted a "federal special plan" to develop Sochi into a world-class resort. The plan aims to improve not only the sports facilities, but also the infrastructure such as the environment, energy and water supply, transportation, and communications, making the city comfortable for both tourists and residents.
The Olympic venues will consist of the Coastal Cluster, which will be the Olympic Park where the skating arena and Central Stadium will be constructed, and the Mountain Cluster, where skiing, snowboarding, freestyle skiing, and sliding events will be held.

ロシア連邦の西南部、クラスノダール地方の黒海北東岸に面する都市。人口約40万人。
気候は温暖で、山岳リゾートと黒海沿岸リゾートのどちらにも近く、観光客が通年集まるロシア有数の保養都市である。硫化水素温泉と泥浴療養地があり、温泉保養地としても栄えてきた。
歴史的には激しい争奪戦の舞台となった時代もあるが、ソビエト連邦時代のスターリン政権下でリゾート地として整備が進み、プーチン政権下でさらなる投資が行われた。2006年5月には、ロシア-EU(欧州連合)サミットが開催されるなど、政治・外交の舞台としても発展している。
14年オリンピック冬季大会開催候補地として韓国の平昌、オーストリアのザルツブルクとともに最終選考に残り、現地時間の07年7月4日、グアテマラで行われた国際オリンピック委員会(IOC)総会で開催地に決定した。ロシアでの冬季五輪開催は初めて。招致活動には、テニスのマリア・シャラポワやフィギュアスケートのエフゲニー・プルシェンコら、ロシア出身の有名スポーツ選手が親善大使を務めた。
ロシア政府は冬季五輪招致に向けて積極的な支援を行い、ソチを世界的レベルのリゾート地として発展させる「連邦特別計画」を採択した。計画では、競技施設だけでなく、環境、光熱・水供給、交通、通信などのインフラを充実し、旅行者にも住人にも快適な都市となることが目指されている。
オリンピック会場は、スケート競技場やセントラルスタジアムなどが建設されるオリンピックパークとなるコースタルクラスター(沿岸域会場)と、スキー、スノーボード、フリースタイル、スライディングの各競技が行われるマウンテンクラスター(山岳部会場)からなる。
