Lagoon - Sekiko

Japanese:
Lagoon - Sekiko

A shallow lake separated from the open sea by a sandbar that developed at the mouth of a bay. Also called a lagoon. Synonymous with lagoon. Many brackish lakes were originally lagoons, and they occupy a high position among Japan's large lakes. A representative example is Lake Saroma (Hokkaido), where a tidal mouth was artificially excavated in 1929 (Showa 4). Also, in Lake Hamana (Shizuoka Prefecture), the sandbar is said to have been broken by the Tokaido earthquake on September 20, 1498 (August 25, Meiō 7) and the Settsu-Kawachi earthquake on September 21, 1510 (August 8, Eishō 7). In this way, lagoons often alternate between brackish and freshwater states in their formation history.
