Props and child actors that aid the actor's performance. *Kabuki: Sai-Nyu Otogi-gusa (1808), Tsujidō scene: "The two perform a vertical dance with the child in their arms as shackles." 5. When playing the upper notes of the shamisen, something that is placed on the neck from above the strings to enhance the sound. It is a rod-shaped object made of wood, ivory, or sometimes metal, and is laid horizontally and tied with a string. *Kunimachi no Sata (1674), "A rosewood shamisen, <abbreviated> with a silver skewer."

かし【枷】

〘名〙 鉄や木で作り、罪人の首、手、足などにはめて自由を束縛する刑具。首かし、手かし、足かしなどがある。かせ。※正倉院文書‐天平宝字六年(762)雑材并檜皮和炭等納帳「架十枝 各長一丈六尺方三寸」※新撰字鏡(898‐901頃)「鎖 連也 足加志 又加奈保太志」
