[Died] February 11, 1978. Hanover. A famous American chemist and educator. He received his doctorate from Harvard University, and after serving as a lecturer he became a professor of organic chemistry, where he was highly acclaimed for his scholarship. In 1933, at the age of 40, he became president of the university. After World War II, he became the High Commissioner to West Germany (1955), where he gained fame as a champion of the democratic spirit. After returning to the United States in 1957, he was active in educational research, studies, and criticism. In particular, the so-called Conant Report, which proposed reforms in high schools, had a considerable impact on reality. His main works include Chemistry of Organic Compounds (33), The Child, the Parents and the State (60), Shaping Educational Policy (64), and My Several Lives (70).
