Portfolio Selection

...We save money through economic activity, and as a result we hold assets. However, the form in which we hold these assets is an economic decision. In other words, economic agents must choose between holding their assets in the form of cash, investing in safe assets with a reliably predictable rate of return such as fixed-term deposits, or holding them in the form of less safe assets such as stocks that have a higher rate of return on average. The analysis of this choice between safe and risky assets is the theory of asset selection (portfolio selection).
