This book is a collection of dialogues and letters on philosophy written by Wang Yangming (Shuren), the founder of Yangmingism, with his disciples. It currently consists of three volumes. It represents the core of Yangming's thought well. It was only in its current form after it was included in the Complete Works of King Wencheng in 1572 (6th year of the Longqing era). The first volume of the sayings was recorded by Xu Ai and other disciples, and was published when Yangming was 47 years old (1518) after being personally reviewed by him. It conveys Yangming's thoughts from around the age of 41 to 47, such as the idea that the mind is the same as reason and that knowledge and action are one. The letters in the middle volume were compiled by Nan Daji, and Qian Dehong made deletions and corrections, and published them together with the second volume of the sayings he compiled himself. When they were included in the Complete Works of King Wencheng, they were divided into three volumes. The middle and lower volumes were compiled after Yangming's death and were not written by him. They develop ideas that he established mainly in his later years, such as the idea of attaining one's innate knowledge of good.
