Dr. Caligari - The Doctor Caligari

Dr. Caligari - The Doctor Caligari

German film. Directed by Robert Wiene. Produced in 1919. A masterpiece of expressionist film that actively adopted the expressionism that arose in Germany in the early 20th century. Consisting of anti-realist elements such as a composition strangely dominated by curves and diagonal lines, distorted perspective, fantastic lighting effects, and exaggerated acting, it is a groundbreaking work in the history of cinema, depicting an intensely subjective internal image of anxiety and chaos.

The original authors, Karl Mayer and Hans Janowitz, intended to depict the brutality of the protagonist, Dr. Caligari, who manipulates the sleeping man Cesare to commit murders, and to denounce the state as a war lord. However, at the film stage, the story was changed to show that the whole thing was the delusion of a psychiatric hospital patient. Werner Krauss plays Dr. Caligari and Conrad Veidt plays the sleeping man. The film was released in Japan in 1921 (Taisho 10). Tokugawa Musei's excellent commentary from the time has become a talking point.
