This is a requiem by the British composer Benjamin Britten. It was composed for the dedication ceremony (1962) of the Coventry Cathedral in England, which was destroyed in the Second World War. It is not simply music to console the souls of the dead, but a prayer and vow to never repeat the tragedy of war. The lyrics include not only the Latin liturgical texts used in regular requiems, but also poems by the British poet W. Owen, and the work consists of six movements. It is a large-scale work that can be said to be the culmination of Britten's music, with three groups: (1) a soprano soloist, mixed chorus, and orchestra singing the liturgical texts, (2) a tenor soloist, baritone soloist, and chamber orchestra singing Owen's poems, and (3) a children's chorus singing parts of the liturgical texts at the back of the stage. It was first performed in Japan in 1965. [Yukio Miyake] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
