In 1154, Nur al-Din of the Zengid dynasty conquered Damascus and established his residence there. He unified central and northern Syria and actively promoted the war against the Crusaders. He also adopted a policy of protecting the Sunnis in opposition to the Shiite Fatimid dynasty, and built the Adiliyya Academy (now the Arab Academy) and the Hadith Institute (Dar al-Hadith) in Damascus. The Ayyubid dynasty (1169-1250) also followed this policy, and sultans and emirs protected the Sunnis, especially the Shafi'i ulama, and competed with each other in building madrasas (schools). *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Arab Academy" is listed below.
