1899-? Polish actress. She defected to the United States (1968) as the director and founder of the Warsaw Jewish Theatre, where she performed, and her mother, Esther, was ignored, despite having been a key figure in the founding of the theatre (1913). During World War II, she briefly led the Jewish theatre in Lvov, Ukraine, and after returning to Poland, she managed Jewish theatres in Lodz (1949-53) and Wroclaw (1953-55), surpassing her mother's achievements. She excelled in roles such as Nora in A Doll's House and the "gutsy mother," and also adapted The Brothers Karamazov. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
