…The Wake clan's Wake (betto) evolved from a title of respect given to a person's name to a kabane, which was used as the title of a local powerful clan with a tradition of descending from the imperial family, and eventually became the clan's name itself. The Wake clan also originally had the clan name Iwanasuwake = Iwanasuwake, and then Fujinowake = Fujinowake. In the 8th century, Kibi no Makibi emerged from Kibi, while Wake no Kiyomaro, his sister Hiromushi, and Kiyomaro's sons Hiroyo, Masatsuna, and Nakayo emerged from the Wake clan, and they played an active role in the central political world, but at the same time maintained their position as local powerful clans as kuni no miyatsuko (provincial governors) of both Mimasaka and Bizen provinces, and the clan was also the head of Fujino County, and it is said that their ancestors' tombs were in Hongo, forming a forest of trees. …

…和気氏のワケ(別)とは,人名に付する尊称からカバネに転化し,皇族から分出した伝承をもつ地方豪族の称として用いられ,やがて氏の名そのものとなった。和気氏も,もとは磐梨別=石生別(いわなすわけ),さらに藤野別=輔治能別(ふじのわけ)の氏姓を称していた。 8世紀に吉備より吉備真備が出たのにたいし,和気氏より和気清麻呂,その姉広虫,清麻呂の子広世,真綱,仲世らが出て,中央政界で活躍したが,同時に美作・備前両国国造(くにのみやつこ)として在地豪族の地位を保ち,同族は藤野郡大領でもあり,祖先以来の墳墓も本郷にあって,拱樹林をなしていたという。…
