…To meet this demand, while tuning the strings higher to obtain a brighter tone, the fingerboard and neck were lengthened, and structural changes were gradually made, such as changing the braces to longer and thicker ones so that the instrument could withstand the increased string tension, and making the angle of the fingerboard to the body steeper. These modifications were also made to older instruments made before that time, so today, instruments made before 1750 that were in their original form are called "old violins" or "baroque violins," while those made after that time or that have been modified in a modern way are called "modern violins." Almost all Stradivari and Guarneri instruments in use today have been modified to become "modern violins." …
