Kamisu [town] - Kamisu

Japanese: 神栖[町] - かみす

A former town in Kashima County in the southeast of Ibaraki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a town in 1970. It occupies the lowlands between the Kashima Nada Sea and the Hitachi River, a tributary of the Tone River. It was once a purely agricultural area, but the development of the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone has dramatically changed the area, with petrochemical, metal, food, and other factories moving in. In August 2005, it merged with Hasaki Town in Kashima County to become a city. National Route 124 runs through it, forming Kamisu City. 78.96 ^km2 . Population: 48,946 (2003).

茨城県南東部，鹿島郡の旧町。1970年町制。鹿島灘と利根川の支流常陸(ひたち)川の間の低地を占める。純農村地帯であったが，鹿島臨海工業地帯の造成で大きく変わり，石油化学，金属，食品などの工場が進出。2005年８月，鹿島郡波崎町と合併し市制。国道124号線が通じる，神栖市となる。78.96km²。４万8946人（2003）。
