A leading daily newspaper in the Chugoku region, published mainly in Hiroshima Prefecture by the Chugoku Shimbun Company. Its headquarters are in Hiroshima City. It began as "Chugoku" in 1892 (Meiji 25), when Nagaya Kenji and Yamamoto Saburo founded the newspaper. Later, Nagaya retired and Yamamoto became president, and since then, most of the newspaper's presidents have come from the Yamamoto family. In 1908 (Meiji 41), the newspaper changed its title to "Chugoku Shimbun" from its 5,000th issue. In 1941 (Showa 16), the newspaper merged with "Kure Shimbun" and "Geibinichi Shimbun," becoming the leading daily newspaper in the prefecture. On August 6, 1945 (Showa 20), the company building and various facilities were damaged by the atomic bomb, and many people were killed in the line of duty, but it was quickly rebuilt after the war. Its company philosophies include the establishment of world peace and the promotion of local culture, and it has attracted attention for its newspaper activities such as campaigns to ban violence and reporting on the atomic bomb. Its circulation in Hiroshima Prefecture is far greater than any other paper. The circulation is approximately 647,500 copies for the morning edition and approximately 40,000 copies for the evening edition (February 2011).
