Nānā Sāhib (English spelling)

Japanese: ナーナー･サーヒブ（英語表記）Nānā Sāhib

A general in the final days of the Maratha Empire in India, from around 1824 to around 1860. He was the adopted son of Baji Rao II, the kingdom's last Peshwa (Prime Minister). After the death of his adoptive father in 1853, the title of Peshwa was refused by the Viceroy of India, Dalhousie. When the Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny) broke out in 1857, he fought alongside the rebel army. Although he was not necessarily a great military commander, he served as a symbol of the rebel army. It is said that he fled to Nepal after the rebellion was put down, but his final moments are unknown. Tantia Topi [Naito Masao]

インド，マラーター王国末期の将。王国最後のペーシュワー(宰相)であったバージー･ラーオ2世の養子。1853年の養父の死後，ペーシュワーの称をインド総督ダルフージーに拒絶される。57年のインド大反乱(セポイの反乱)勃発に際しては，反乱軍と行動をともにする。必ずしも優れた武将ではないが，反乱軍の一つの象徴としての役割を担った。反乱が鎮圧されたのちネパールに逃れたとされるが，その最後の様相は未詳である。ターンティア･トーピー【内藤雅雄】
