A general in the final days of the Maratha Empire in India, from around 1824 to around 1860. He was the adopted son of Baji Rao II, the kingdom's last Peshwa (Prime Minister). After the death of his adoptive father in 1853, the title of Peshwa was refused by the Viceroy of India, Dalhousie. When the Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny) broke out in 1857, he fought alongside the rebel army. Although he was not necessarily a great military commander, he served as a symbol of the rebel army. It is said that he fled to Nepal after the rebellion was put down, but his final moments are unknown. Tantia Topi [Naito Masao] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
