Pardubitz in German. The capital of the eastern Czech (Bohemia) region in the western Czech Republic. It is located about 95 km east of Prague, at the confluence of the upper reaches of the Elbe River and the Hrudimka River. At the center of a fertile agricultural region, grain trading, sugar refining, brewing, machinery, rubber, and building materials manufacturing are carried out here. After World War II, the oil refining industry developed, and the city became one of the leading chemical industrial areas in the former Czechoslovakia. It is also famous for horse breeding and horse racing. It was originally established as a commercial center in the 13th century. It is the only purely Renaissance townscape in Bohemia, and has a 16th-century cathedral and castle. Population: 94,857 (1991 estimate).
