Calamity Jane

A heroine of the American West. Her real name was Martha Jane Cannary. According to legend, she was an expert horse and gunfighter, disguised as a man to serve as a military scout, and was nicknamed Calamity because she often rescued her allies from disasters. In reality, she worked as a handywoman for the army and also worked as a prostitute. There is no basis for the rumor that she was Wild Bill Hickok's lover. However, she gained a status as a famous woman during her lifetime, adding color to the bleak West, and has been the heroine of dime novels and movies.

アメリカ西部の女傑。本名マーサ･ジェーン･カナリーMartha Jane Cannary。伝説では馬と鉄砲の名手で，男装して軍隊のスカウトとなり，よく味方の災難(カラミティ)を救ったのでカラミティと呼ばれたという。じっさいは軍隊の雑役婦をつとめ，娼婦のようなこともしていたらしい。ワイルド･ビル･ヒコックの恋人という噂にも根拠はない。ただ，殺風景な西部に彩りを添えるものとして生前から名物女の地位を得，ダイム･ノベル(10セント小説)や映画のヒロインとなってきた。
