A principality founded by Karamanoglu Mehmet Bey in 1256 when the Anatolian Seljuk Empire was destroyed. Karaman was the center of the state, but later the capital was moved to Konya. It was known for exporting timber and breeding quality horses. It was the most stubborn resister of the Ottoman annexation of Anatolia, but came under the control of the Ottoman Empire in 1466.
