British Somaliland

The country's territory stretches from the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden to the Indian Ocean coast, forming a key-shaped area and constituting the major part of the Horn of Africa. In June 1960, the northern British Territory of Somaliland gained independence, followed by the southern Italian Trust Territory of Somaliland in July of the same year, and the two were united to form the Republic of Somalia (renamed the Somali Democratic Republic in 1969). The country's name, which is fitting for a pastoral country, comes from the word "Somar," which means "to milk."
