They were used for cargo transport on coastal routes until the 1960s, but are now rarely used. Motor sailing ships are a type of ship unique to Japan, with sails ranging from small one-masted sloops to large two-masted schooners. They were equipped with a hot-bulb engine as a propulsion engine, but this was auxiliary, and they were primarily sailed, so under the Ship Law they were treated as sailing ships.
