In the Natufian culture of Palestine (dated to 8000-7000 BC by carbon-14), they were used to harvest wild grasses, and since then, straight-bladed tools fitted to bone handles have been widely used. As late as 3000 BC, sickles with L- or S-shaped handles appeared in Egypt and Mesopotamia, with the grip and blade forming a nearly right angle, and the stone blade was shaped to form an inward arc. …
