This refers to a karuta gathering of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. It is said that the first Hyakunin Isshu karuta cards were written by Prince Dosho during the Genna era (1615-24), but as none currently exist, the authenticity of this is unknown. When Matsubaya in Kyoto began selling woodblock-printed karuta in 1685 (Jokyo 2), karuta became popular among the general public, and gradually became incorporated into New Year's entertainment. At the time, in addition to "chirashitori," in which cards are scattered and then taken, "Genpei-sen," in which players are divided into two groups, was also used.
