Athalie

Japanese: アタリー(英語表記)Athalie
Athalie
The last play by French playwright Racine, a five-act verse tragedy with chorus. Written in 1691. Like his previous work, Esther (1689), this is a religious tragedy written for the Saint-Cyr women's college at the request of Madame de Maintenon, the favorite mistress of Louis XIV. Only a simple rehearsal took place at the royal court in 1691, and the play was first performed at the Comédie-Française in 1716. Based on the Old Testament books, Kings and Chronicles, the play tells the story of a coup d'état in which Joad (Jehoiada), the high priest of Jehovah (Yahweh), overthrows Queen Athali (Athaliah), who reigned over the Kingdom of Judah and worshipped Baal, and crowns Prince Joas (Joash).
