A female hunter in Greek mythology. She is mentioned in both Arcadian and Boeotian legends. Her mother was Clymene and her father was Iasos or Maenaros (Schoeneus in Boeotia). Because her Arcadian father Iasos wanted a boy, she was abandoned immediately after birth and picked up by a hunter. Like Artemis, Atalanta protected her virginity and loved hunting, even participating in the Calydonian boar hunt. She shot and killed Leukos and Helaios, two members of the Centaur monster clan, who tried to rape her. Atalanta, who did not want to marry, made it a condition for suitors to race against her and win, and killed the defeated young men one after another. However, Hippomenes (or Melanion) threw three golden apples given to him by the goddess Aphrodite one after another during the race, overtaking her while she was picking them up, and won the race, eventually making her his wife. Later, when the two were hunting together in the precincts of Zeus, he transformed them into lions, and the story of the boar hunt is told in Swinburne's play Atalanta of Calydon.
