A city on the western coast of northern Luzon in the Philippines. The capital of Ilocos Sur. Its predecessor was Ciudad Fernandina, a fortress built by the Spanish in 1575 to defend against Japanese pirates, and it flourished as a trading hub. Miraculously spared from the destruction of World War II, the city's old streets remain, including St. Paul's Cathedral and Salcedo Plaza. In 1999, it was registered as a World Heritage Site (cultural heritage) under the name "Historic City of Vigan." Source: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Information | Legend |
