Taboos are prohibitions against actions that are permitted in daily life when performing religious festivals or praying to gods and Buddhas. There are food taboos and behavioral taboos. A typical food taboo is the prohibition against pregnant women eating rabbit meat or green onions, with sayings such as "eating rabbit meat will cause a child to have a harelip" and "eating green onions will cause a child to have body odor." Also, when praying to gods and Buddhas, it is often the case that people abstain from everyday luxury items such as alcohol, tobacco, and sugar. An example of a behavioral taboo is a taboo that says for pregnant women, "if you see a dead person or a funeral, your child will have a black birthmark."
