Gortun's Code - Gortun's Code

Japanese: ゴルテュン法典 - ゴルテュンほうてん
Gortun's Code - Gortun's Code
A large inscription from the 5th century BC unearthed at the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Gortyn in the south-central part of the Aegean island of Crete. It was carved into part of the curved inner wall of a small Roman theater and has been preserved in its original form to this day, but it is believed that this wall originally belonged to a Greek court building. The inscription consists of 12 columns, each of which has about 55 lines, with an average of just over 20 characters per line. It contains laws related to family and inheritance, as well as criminal law, civil procedure, and obligations and property law, and is commonly referred to as the "Gortyn Code" due to its size, the diversity of its provisions, and a certain coherence.
