Japanese: 諺文 - おんもん

〘Noun〙 (Korean pronunciation of 'ən-mun "论文") A character unique to Korea. It is a type of elaborate phonetic alphabet for phonetic notation, and was invented in the mid-15th century and promulgated as "Hunminjeongeum". Originally a derogatory name for Chinese characters, it is now called Hangul (han-gɯr "Great Letters"). [Modern Culture Encyclopedia (1937)]
