A general term for the American theater movement that practiced experimental theatrical innovation in the 1960s in opposition to commercial Broadway theater and the Off-Broadway theater that followed it. It was characterized by performances in venues other than established theaters, such as small theaters with a capacity of less than 100 people, such as cafes like Café Chino and La Mama Experimental Theater, and theaters that used spaces such as lofts. From this movement emerged theater companies such as The Open Theatre and The Performance Group, which had a major impact on theater around the world with their acting that emphasized physicality, and playwrights such as S. Shepard, who used innovative methods to expose the realities of America. Since the late 1970s, the movement's momentum has been declining.
