Two brothers who were leading British neoclassical architects and furniture designers. Their father was the famous Scottish architect William Adam (1689-1748). Their elder brother Robert Adam (1728-92) was born in Kirkcaldy, north of Edinburgh. They went on the Grand Tour from 1754 to 1758, and met the classical architect Charles Louis Clérisseau in France.
